Gujarathi Patra Recipe | Alu Vadi Recipe | Pathrode Recipe

Patra – An interesting savory snack from the state of Gujrat, India! Interesting, because, I experienced a complete medley of tastes from this snack. It has got a mixture of performance from the tangy tamarind, spicy chili, sharp ginger and sweet jaggery in it. Altogether, the taste is jumbled, but yeah it’s NICE!         I will have to write about my friends Megha, Shruti and Priya before I write about the Patra recipe. My first experience with Patra was at Megha’s house. She is a Gujarathi who was brought up in Andhra. She makes awesome laddus with wheat flour, kous kous and lots of ghee . When I visited her for Gokulashtami pooja, she asked me to try a frozen snack. As she thawed, she spoke about the snack. ‘Meena, you should try this. This is a Gujarathi snack. Savory. Will be awesome! I like it a… Continue reading »

Valakkai Kola Urundai Recipe | Vegetable Meatballs Recipe

I vividly remember my Grandmother laddling crispy meatballs out from the sizzling oil in her kitchen. Meatballs – we call it ‘Kola Urundai’. The ‘Kola Urundai’ prepared by my Grandmother used to be perfect with crispy outer shell and well cooked meaty content inside. As a child I used to enjoy the outer crispy shell and leave the meaty content in the plate. Same thing happens when I eat her Paniyarams too. My mom’s a big fan of her ‘Kola Urundai Kuzhambu’ (Meatball gravy). ‘Unga Appatha pandra kola urunda taste varavae varathu’* – this is the usual sigh of my mother whenever she makes Kola Orundai.     I will need to create a separate ‘Kola Urundai’ hub to talk about my Grandma’s Minced Meat Kola Urundai Recipe. Stocking that idea for another day. The recipe today is about making Veggie Meatballs – Vegetable balls using Raw Bananas. Vazhakkai… Continue reading »

Arisi Maavu Puttu Recipe – How to make Rice Flour Puttu

Pacharisi (maavu) Pittu Recipe | Puttu using Raw Rice Flour   If you have read my posts on Ragi Puttu and Wheat puttu you will have an idea that I’m a Puttu maniac. Having said long stories about Puttu making in these two posts does not conclude I will stop the story telling. I spent few years of college life in campus hostel. The hostel that had the most annoying rules; especially this one: ‘No talking in the Dining Hall’. When I first heard about the dining hall rule I got mad and mocked the rule. But once I started to taste the food served in the hostel I thought it’s an unnecessary rule because the food tasted so good that everybody’ll be busy enjoying the food stuffed in their mouth and nobody will wanted to speak.     If there is ONE thing that I enjoyed in my college… Continue reading »

Raagi Puttu Recipe (with video) | Kelvaragu Puttu Recipe | South-Indian Breakfast Recipes

How to make Keppai Puttu – Puttu Recipe & Video [Watch in “Full Screen” mode. Make sure you do not move your mouse often in order to read the recipe instructions clearly. Few text remain hidden under the seek panel so avoid to mouse-over the player]   If my ammachi (maternal grandmother) is the Queen of Bajji making , my appatha (paternal grandma) is the Queen of Queens in making Paniyarams . Chicken dishes means to refer ammachi’s recipes, mutton dishes means to refer appatha’s recipes. In that way, if white rice puttu is a usual breakfast item in my ammachi veedu, wheat puttu and this raagi puttu are done often in my appatha veedu. Dad and I like kodhumai puttu (wheat puttu) so very much that if somebody watches us me while eating kothumai puttu, their brain will do a quick pattern search and match me with some hungry… Continue reading »

Famous Indian snacks - Pakora

Homemade Pakoda Recipe ~ Kadalai Paruppu Pakoda ~ How to make pakoda for pakoda kuzhambu

Indian Pakora Recipe | Chana dal Pakora Recipe| Tea-time Snacks recipes Consider it an appetizer for a party or a late afternoon snack to accompany your late afternoon reading, this pakora recipe does a very good job in both roles. We normally make this pakoda when we prepare our traditional Chettind Pakoda Gravy – a spicy curry made by soaking fried pakoras in spiced tamarind sauce. The remaining pakora-batter will be transformed into this crunchy version and will be enjoyed as a side dish for the rice and gravy or as our tea-time snacks. But if mom had plans to make it as the side dish, she knew that she has to spend some more time in the kitchen frying more and more pakoras. Yeah, we’ll gobble the pakodas as and when it is fried since we’re not resistant to its smell nor its taste .   How to make… Continue reading »

Paasi Payaru Pooranam recipe | Inippu Kozhukattai Pooranam Recipe | Stuffing for Sweet Modak

Paasipayaru Inippu Pooranam for Kozhukattai | Sweet Poornalu | Green-gram stuffing for Modakas This is “THE” Pooranam recipe for Modak/Kozhukattai. Sooo delicious that Lord Ganapathi might gulp in all that was offered during the puja. Better watch him stealthily during the prayers . The tummy feels so light since we are replacing kadalai paruppu (split chickpeas) with paasi payaru (green mung beans) for preparing this sweet filling. If you’re not going to believe me about this recipe, then ask Lord Ganesh if he is willing to leave to the sea after the Ganesh Utsav . Of all the Indian festivals that I like, Vinayaka Chavithi and Karthigai Deepam are my most favorite.  If Lord Vinayakar is one parameter for liking ‘Vinayak Chaturthi’, then Kozhukattai is the other main factor. I think everybody like this simple sweet delight made of steamed rice dumpling filled in with the magical flavors of coconut, jaggery… Continue reading »

Onion Rings | Crispy Onion Rings Recipe | Crunchy Onion Rings

Onion Rings | Crispy Onion Rings Recipe | Crunchy Onion Rings   I had no idea that there exists a snack called Onion Rings until I came to the US. There are instant onion rings available in market like potato chips and frozen onion rings which you can fry them when you feel like wanting to eat them hot. But I never bought either the instant onion rings or the frozen onion rings. I liked the idea of Onion Rings when I looked at their pictures in the product cover. So I googled them and chose the exact site which had the Exxxact Recipe for onion rings I was searching for. When I was in a mission to surprise my husband with little snacks every evening or almost every evening, I used to search for simple, yet delicious snacks recipes. This recipe for onion rings is one among them. Easy… Continue reading »

French Fries | Finger Chips Recipe

French Fries Recipe | Finger Chips Recipe   Do you agree with me that people who never learnt to cook or who showed no interest in cooking or those who do not know where the kitchen is in their house, turn out to be the best home makers and cooks? 😆  Yeah. This is 100 percent true as far as I noticed. Proof is my lovely aunt and my pretty sister. And when you taste for the first time the dish made by them, it will really taste so so great! This beautiful recipe is one which I observed my aunt prepare when she was engaged to my uncle. Aunts are really special and if they happen to be the youngest of the family, then they’re the heroines of the house. My aunt is such a special one in our house since she is the youngest in my Father’s family…. Continue reading »
